What cookies are

Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. We also use similar technologies such as local storage. We group them by purpose into the categories below. Non-essential categories are off by default where consent is required, and you can change your choices at any time.

Categories we use

CategoryConsentWhat it doesExamples
Strictly necessaryNo consent requiredRequired for the site and app to function — authentication, session management, security, and load balancing.Supabase Auth session, Cloudflare Turnstile (bot protection — processes a token and IP)
FunctionalConsent where requiredRemember your preferences, such as language and interface state.Locale / preference cookies
Analytics / performanceConsent where required (updated consent mechanism rolling out)Help us understand how the product is used and diagnose problems, including masked interaction replays — the text you type or read is never captured, and images and other media are blocked. We are rolling out an updated consent mechanism; until it ships you can opt out by contacting [email protected] or by blocking analytics cookies in your browser.PostHog product analytics
Advertising measurementConditional — only on surveys with conversion tracking enabled (disclosed on that survey's welcome card)On this website we do not use marketing or advertising cookies. On individual participant surveys recruited via Meta ads, a researcher can enable Meta conversion tracking: the Meta Pixel then sets first-party measurement cookies (_fbc — the ad click identifier, set by us; _fbp — set by Meta's script) so completed surveys can be attributed to the ad that recruited the participant. Surveys without conversion tracking enabled load no Meta code and set neither cookie._fbc, _fbp (Meta Pixel — pixel-enabled surveys only)

On our participant survey experience we keep cookies to a minimum because respondents are a higher-sensitivity surface: strictly-necessary cookies plus the analytics storage described above, which supports only masked interaction telemetry — nothing you type or read is captured. On the subset of surveys where Meta conversion tracking is enabled, the advertising-measurement cookies described above are also set, and that survey's welcome card says so.

How to control cookies

  • Consent controls. Where we ask for consent, you can accept or reject non-essential categories and change your choice at any time through our cookie preferences.
  • Browser settings. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and warn you before they are set. Blocking strictly-necessary cookies may stop parts of the Service from working.
  • Analytics. Our analytics provider (PostHog) collects usage events and masked interaction replays — inputs and on-screen text are never captured, and media is blocked. We are rolling out an updated consent mechanism; in the meantime you can opt out by contacting [email protected] or by blocking analytics cookies in your browser.
